WINTER HAVEN – A lone tear emerged from Chris Hazelwood’s eye as she discussed a principle that guides her life.
“Wouldn’t this be a wonderful world if everyone took on a cause?” she said.
Hazelwood, 63, of Winter Haven has taken up enough causes for at least 10 people who haven’t.
“She’s been a top volunteer,” said Danielle Harris, community-development manager at the American Cancer Society of Polk County. “The best volunteers are the ones who make the effort something personal.”
Indeed, the mission to raise money for cancer research became personal for Hazelwood after she won her own battle with breast cancer in 2008. The initial diagnosis came as a shock, she said.
